Message
Have you heard of Oprah’s recent addition to her book club, A New Earth:
Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose, by Eckhart Tolle? Intrigued by the buzz that was
created around this book, I picked up a copy. I have to say that reading it made me
reflect on my personal life more than anything that I have read for a long time.
A New Earth is not a book about the status of our environment. It is about
living your life in a new, refreshing way, with a focus on living in the present
moment instead of being burdened by the past or depending on the future for
happiness.
The most profound element in the book is the shift in focus to the journey
and the “how” of accomplishing goals instead of the end result. My favourite
quote explains this notion, “Not what you do, but how you do what you do
determines whether you are fulfilling your destiny. And how you do what you do
is determined by your state of consciousness.”
Living consciously focuses on living in the present moment, being aware,
observing all of the signs in a situation or a challenge, and listening on a deeper
level to seek understanding. Listening to understand, without thinking about your
own life or story, is important. Otherwise, thinking leads to the involvement of
the ego which may be looking for an opportunity to benefit from the situation.
Eckhart Tolle clearly emphasizes that the human ego is the main inhibitor to
overall happiness. The ego constantly strives to build itself up. The evidence occurs
when you see people proving that they are right while making others wrong and
needing to feel superior while diminishing others. For the ego, being happy is a
condition that is dependent on getting that big screen TV, driving the fancy car,
wearing designer clothes, or getting the next promotion. Once the ego reaches its
goal, it’s on to the next. All of these things have no permanence and provide only
temporary fulfillment for the ego. Over time, confusion sets in because even with
the greatest success, happiness in not always achieved or sustained.
This book helped me realize that I need to be more thankful and live in
the present instead of looking to the future to find success. I have learned that
challenges are opportunities to learn, listen and respond, instead of occasions
to feel attacked and become emotionally charged. I have learned that the fiery
orange sunset is not the end of a day, but a celebration of a beautiful day.
I am thankful for the opportunities that I have had with Open Magazine in
the past two years. It has been extremely rewarding to unfold inspiring stories
and helpful information in each issue. I will be returning to Waterloo as a school
administrator in the fall after a two year sabbatical. I would like to thank our
production staff and writers for their heartfelt dedication and our advertisers
for their commitment to the health and living industry. I am looking forward to
enjoying each future issue of Open Magazine as much as you, our readers, do!
