Pearl ’s O’Wisdom
As a little girl, I remember a roll-on perfume that smelled like cotton candy and only lasted about three minutes. Such
was the extent of my personal perfume collection at the age of seven.
My mother always had perfume. As a young girl, I would admire the beautiful cut glass bottles and perfume dispensers
on her dresser. I wasn’t allowed to play with them, but sometimes when my mother was going out, she would give me a
spritz or two behind my ears. This would send me skipping with delight. Newly anointed with the heavenly fragrance, I sauntered
around the house proudly, dispensing my scent until my brothers informed me that I stank.
The question many women face today is to perfume or go au naturel. On a recent shopping trip with a friend, we decided to
stop by the fragrance counter at a department store. Memories of my teenage years came flooding back. Visions of perfume fights
while the counter girl wasn’t watching, dousing ourselves with fragrance after fragrance until we no longer smelled human, all
returned in an instant. Smell is one of our strongest memory triggers and for a girl, perfume is queen. Today, if
I catch a whiff of Estée Lauder, I automatically think of my grandmother who has long since passed away.
While my friend and I enjoyed the beautiful bottles of perfume and sprayed the neat little slips of
testing paper, my nose began to tickle and a full blown sneezing fit ensued. I couldn’t help wondering about
all of the people who are sensitive to fragrance and live with allergic reactions.
I informed my friend that I needed to get out of the fragrance department and, as we
walked away, I said good-bye to my last perfume spraying frenzy; the
protestations of my olfactory glands were enough to send me
running.
I didn’t purchase any fragrances that shopping day, but I
did come away with a new-found appreciation for the saying,
“a little goes a long way.”
